Vertical AI Will Win in Retail

Horizontal AI platforms promise everything. Vertical AI delivers. Here's why specialization beats generalization.

The AI market is splitting into two camps: horizontal platforms that do everything (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) and vertical products that do one thing deeply (Harvey for law, Abridge for healthcare, Mondian for retail).

The horizontal platforms are foundation layers. The vertical products are where value gets delivered.

Why Generalists Struggle in Retail

Retail has domain-specific data (POS transactions, inventory movements, purchase orders), domain-specific metrics (GMROI, OTB, weeks of supply), and domain-specific workflows (buying cycles, markdown cadences, allocation runs). A general AI needs to learn all of this from scratch with every conversation.

A vertical AI starts with this knowledge baked in. It knows that a 40% sell-through at week 8 is concerning for fashion but normal for basics. It knows that a 2-week supplier lead time means reordering now, not next Monday.

The Integration Advantage

Horizontal AI connects to everything but understands nothing. It can read your Shopify data but doesn't know what "variants" mean in a merchandising context. Vertical AI integrates deeply with retail-specific platforms and understands the data model natively.

The 85 Skills Moat

Mondian's 85+ retail skills aren't just prompts — they're tested analytical workflows with specific statistical methods, validated against real retail data. ABC analysis, demand decomposition, vendor scorecards, markdown optimization — each one is a mini-product. A general AI would need to rediscover these methods every time.
